GLG Partners has made a series of appointments in Asia to form a long/short equities team focused on fundamental stock-picking.

The Hong Kong-based team will be co-managed by David Mercurio, head of Asia equity and co-head of global equity strategies, and Ben Freischmidt, risk specialist. The team will have four sector specialists. David Walsh will specialise in industrials. He joined GLG in April 2012 from Optimal Fund Management where he had been partner. Nick Vidale, who has been at the firm since 2008, will work on financials. Sahil Khanna will focus on consumer and TMT and will join GLG in August. He previously worked at Geosphere Capital as a senior analyst covering consumer and technology sectors. Carl Esprey, a GLG veteran since January 2008, is the materials specialist and will be based in London.

Man GLG has a long history in Asia. Man first came to Asia 15 years ago and what started as a small distribution office in Hong Kong is now a major networking spanning Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney, with nearly a quarter of the firm’s AuM derived from the region. GLG also has experience in APAC and acquired a trading license in Hong Kong in 2010.
