Former Larch Lane COO unveils hedge fund study program at Fordham University
The former COO at Larch Lane Advisors, the fund of funds, has established a study program for students hoping to specialise in alternative investments at Fordham University in New York.
Kevin Mirabile, professor of finance at Fordham University, and also a former global head of prime brokerage at Barclays, said the program would offer dedicated courses on alternative investments, as well as practical guidance and education to students hoping to pursue careers in hedge fund investing, private equity, venture capital, real estate investment management, commodities and hard assets.
“The program has a strong emphasis on non-academic skills such as ensuring students get a Bloomberg certification, excel skills and interviewing training. A lot of hedge funds and private equity firms do not recruit at the undergraduate level, and courses like this will encourage them to do so,” said Mirabile.
The course will also teach students about how net profit and loss is calculated, mark to market and valuation practices, implications of leverage, how to borrow stock and its impact on short-selling. “These students will be able to hit the ground running when they join a hedge fund, which in this low return environment, is a positive for managers hoping to curb costs,” said Mirabile.
The program will take on 25 students each year and it will provide them with work experience at hedge funds, real estate managers and private equity shops in New York. “We also actively invite guest speakers to chat with the students. These will be top-flight CEOs from major alternatives businesses,” he said.
